'Idapu Kayitham''s Title Ignites a Social Media Debate Even Before Its Launch

The film 'Idupu Kayitham', starring Priyadarshi and Nagadurga, was launched with pooja ceremony Saturday. But it was the title that went viral just after the launch, and in a matter of seconds became a hot topic on the social media platforms.

The film produced by Tabitha Sukumar under Sukumar Writings with Bunny Vaas Works, has Vamsi Reddy Dondapati directing. With a rural Telangana setting and the emotive theme of divorce, the title 'Idupu Kayitham' literally means 'a divorce paper' in the Telangana dialect.

Producer Tabitha Sukumar expressed that she saw the story's true potential as a woman of Telangana and decided to produce it immediately. Priyadarshi and Nagadurga also expressed their excitement being a part of the film, which also has a few Telugu television personalities in important roles.

But soon, the name sparked heated debate across social media. The title was questioned by people unaware of the Telangana dialect. Some users jokingly responded that the title of the film needed to be rendered in Telugu. Others accused the makers of overthinking and giving a nonsensical title.

Criticism of the title did not sit well with Telangana people. Some people felt that the criticisms were a form of ridicule against their dialect, not a simple request for clarification. They added that Telugu films have always used words and expressions from different regions, and that viewers learn to understand the meanings, rather than ridicule them.

The conversation sparked public fury, with a noted academic, 'Professor Ghanta Chakrapani' famously defending the title. He said, "Idupu Kayitham" clearly means the divorce certificate," lifted his eyebrows, "And why people are not willing to accept a word used in their dialect?" The comment resonated with the conversations and intensified them further.

Quite unintentionally, the twist is the free publicity for the film. Priyadarshi who was praised all over for  'Balagam' leads the film's cast along with folk singer turned actress Nagadurga and for 'Idupu Kayitham'  has taken all the attention. Whatever comes in the debate about the title one thing is certain, the film has made sure it has piqued the audience's interest even before the shoot.
